AUSBRUCH

A German x South East Asian vocal outburst

The title “Ausbruch,” derived from German, translates to “breakout,” symbolizing the explosive and dynamic nature of the recital. Dedicated in German to reflect the identities of many participants with connections to Germany and Austria, the programme formed part of the Asian segment of Opera Festival Asia’s Pilot Silk Road series in Singapore, highlighting the project’s role in opening the Asian route. The planning was intentionally pilot and spontaneous, bringing a raw, unpredictable, and electrifying energy, with works selected for their relevance to German language and Southeast Asian culture, spanning classical to contemporary repertoire.
Supported by the German and Austrian Embassies, Opera Festival Asia presented Ausbruch as a showcase of sophisticated works by Schubert, Schönberg, Mahler, Wagner, Brecht, Weil, Offenbach, Wang Chenwei, Nicholas Ho, Chen Zhangyi, Oskar Gigele, and Liu Bin, drawn from operas such as Freischütz, Tales of Hoffmann, Erwartung, Fall der Stadt Mahagonny, and song cycles including Das Knaben Wunderhorn and Schwanengesang. The cast brought together exceptional talent from Singapore, Southeast Asia, and Europe, including Wendy Woon (SG), Alan Lau (MY), Priya Pariyachart (TH), Kant Lormsomboon (TH), New Kittin (TH), Amelia Tang (SG), Samuel Yuen (SG), Gustav Back (SWE), Amelie Alu (FRA/ITA), and Anija Lombard (AT).
Featuring visuals by Su-Yin Mah and under the artistic direction of Heather Tan, the project was realised at Theatre Practice Singapore in collaboration with Creative Sync, Vocal Associates, and Evergreen Consultancies. It was supported by Cristofori, Bechstein, Singapore Global Network, Italian Embassy, and Bombora House, and welcomed numerous diplomatic guests from European and Asian embassies, fully embodying the spirit of cultural fusion and artistic exchange that defines Opera Asia.
